This castle-fortress, located in Roquetas de Mar and also known as Castillo de Las Roquetas, was built between the end of the 16th century and the beginning of the 17th century on a tower of Nasrid origin.
Its construction was carried out to defend the salt production of Las Salinas de Roquetas from the numerous attacks suffered by the population by Turkish and Berber pirates in order to steal salt. The exploitation of salt began to take place in Roman times. Turaniana as it was called Roquetas de Mar by the Romans, was a settlement that became very important due to the industries that developed around salt. Products like salted fish and gárum - a sauce made with fermented fish that delighted Greeks and Romans - were exported to Rome, constituting these the source of economic development that occurs in the municipality at this time.
After its reconstruction completed in the year 2.003, it is a space dedicated to a museum, in which there are numerous exhibitions of painting and photography.
